Just Because You Can Spin, Doesn't Mean You Can Waltz
Dr Sanity has a terrific post on the perils of attempting to 'spin' or 'frame' political issues and debate. In her post, Spare Me The Hysteria, she clearly points out that when style supersedes substance in any debate, the results can backfire.
The Democrat party seems to have cast their lot with liberal elite, rather than their tradional base- hard working-class Americans. Those Americans do not have the luxury of obsessing over the esoteric- they have to feed their families, day in and day out. Their mothers and fathers don't pay their bills. Pragmatism trumps pie in the sky idealism.
In an age where every child thinks that he or she has the right or talent to be a star, to be not only heard but heeded, the Democrats took a calculated gamble- and lost. Americans still want substance. Many died in the wool Democrats are uncomfortable, too, with the change in tenor.
That change has cost the Democrats dearly. They deliberately chose to give the court jesters of Hollywood a voice- notwithstanding how out of touch with reality they really are. That self delusion is greater than all the Hollywood epics combined. Martin Sheen, it appears, really does believe at times, that he has what it takes to be president.
In the exercise of that self absorbption and self centeredness, Hollywood has alienated much of the country. Strangely, much of Hollywood remains in denial as to their own irrelevance.
Using media and PR to spin disagreements, rather than deal with them, is a recipe for disaster. Americans are smarter than that. They will agree to suspend reality and allow themselves disbelief for $7.50 and two hours of time. They will not accept the relevance of court jesters in their lives once the movie ends.
When was the last time you heard anyone say 'Barbra Striesand is brilliant. She understands my life. We are sister soulmates. She convinced me to change my opinion.' ?
This country was built on the principle that people will resolve problems in the way they best see fit and in a way that serves their beliefs- not in the way they are told to, by people who have no idea what the real world is all about.
The country is best served with a healthy opposition- and what passes for opposition now is no more than a contrived script, reality, substance and truth be damned. A few choreographed moves in front of a mirror floor does not a waltz make.
Hollywood needs to believe the 'George Bush is Hitler' mantra. They have to. Without that mantra, their irrelevance is there for all to see. Sadly, that irrelevance is being borne by the Democrat party.
The average American is a lot smarter than Hollywood and the Democrat party would have you believe.
The following are two typical examples of the way the Democrats like to frame the issues. They are not content with stating that they happen to disagree with the Republican point of view. No...instead we get the following headlines:She goes on to address 'emotional overreach.'
WASTE, FRAUD, AND KILLING POOR PEOPLE which discusses the "crazy, heartless people" who are suggesting making cuts in the federal budget.
One of the themes of their blubbering is the mindless chant that Republicans are trying to "DESTROY" this country by raising the deficit and spending money on ridiculous things like the Iraq War/War on Terror; or making stupid promises to rebuild New Orleans. The second, competing theme is the hysteria about Republicans "killing" poor people; "raping" women; and waging a "war" on the poor so that the rich and wealthy can get richer and wealthier. And takes on that overreach, head on:
What if poverty and hopelessness and all social problems for that matter, could be solved by shifting the paradigm from the Marxist dialectic to one of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness? To one of personal empowerment and responsibility instead of perpetual victimhood? What if we unleash the human spirit and allow people to pursue their happiness; instead of having a vested interest in keeping the poor and helpless...poor and helpless?Dr Sanity approaches reality head and without the rose colored glasses of assumed preconditions.
