No Sunshine, No Lollipops

Much has been written about the case of Abdul Rahman, the Afghan Christian convert that faced execution in his country. Throughout much of the Muslim world, individuals who renounce Islam in favor of another faith (or just renounce Islam), are routinely threatened with death.

Many nations that have helped to liberate Afghanistan, or support those efforts, have expressed their outrage at even the possibility of the death penalty being imposed on an individual because of his or her choice of religious expression. Sadly, Afghanistan is not the only place where such severe religious persecution persists.

Societies and cultures that persist in such outrageous and heinous behavior cannot be counted and afforded a seat at the table of civilized nations.

That said, it is clear that any nation where such barbarity is accepted practice should not be allowed an equal vote in the UN. Non Governmental Organizations (NGO's) from these countries or that endorse or remain silent on these atrocities should be stripped of their credentials. Let's bring a little sunshine into the arena and let's name names

If a country or NGO refuses to abide by these minimal rules, as endorsed by the UN Commission on Human Rights, they should be stripped of their UN membership privileges, not the least of which are UN voting privileges. In addition, no UN aid should be given to those countries that fail to live up to minimal human rights standards.

No sunshine, no lollipops.

Instead of the UN lowering the bar and accommodating nations with lower moral and ethical standards, maybe its' time to raise the bar. Giving Saddam Hussein's Iraq an equal voice at the table was not the UN's finest hour. The UN has become an Arab League, of sorts, an organization that exists soley to promote the agenda and the status quo of regimes and ideologies that are toxic to all under their influence.

It isn't as if raising that bar will cost any more lives and it isn't as if a UN without Sudan, Yemen or even Saudi Arabia will really bring about the end of the civilized world.

By the way, see Steyn. Like the steak sauce, it's that important.
